“He is someone who can play just off the front or just in behind the front. He is a real creative talent and he will give us more strings to our bow.

“He understands his position, he has played at this level for a while now and he has done well for Birmingham.

“I think that he is a player that, on his day, can unlock the best defences in this division. He will be a really good acquisition for us.”

The Millers had hoped to sign the former Inverness player in time for Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Cardiff, but the move was delayed due to ongoing deals further up the chain.

But the Teessiders agreed to end the Italian’s loan by mutual consent, facilitated by their signing of Southampton winger Gaston Ramirez for the rest of the season on loan, which smoothed the wheels for Fabbrini to head to St Andrews and Shinnie to join the Millers.
