Right as wayne: Rooney puts England through to face Italy

ENGLAND progressed through to the knockout stages of the European Championships by beating Ukraine in Donetsk.

A second half header from Wayne Rooney was enough to hand Roy Hodgson’s team a 1-0 victory. They will now face Italy in the quarter finals on Sunday.

The result meant England topped their group after France were beaten 2-0 by Sweden

The game was not without its controversy however as Ukraine were disallowed a clear goal when a shot from Devic crossed the line before John Terry cleared.

Despite the presence of a match official on the line the goal was not given, with the debate about goal line technology sure to be reopened.

Many England fans, however, will see the incident as payback for the World Cup in South Africa two years ago when a shot from Frank Lampard was disallowed against Germany despite clearly crossing the line.

Ukraine, who are now out of the tournament alongside co-hosts Poland, will feel doubly hard-done by after dominating much of the game and creating far more chances. However, England did enough to hold on for the win.

Speaking after the game, captain Steven Gerrard said: “Tonight’s performance was not fantastic but we worked hard and we have won it.”

At home there was more controversy before the game after Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne sought to justify the UK’s partial boycott of Euro 2012 matches over human rights concerns by claiming England were unlikely to make the final. Mr Browne said “history suggests” the team would not make the latter stages of the tournament.
