Rise of Town proves there is life after Rhodes

The Terriers sold the Scottish international to Blackburn Rovers for £8m shortly before the summer transfer window closed last month.

Losing a striker who netted 40 goals last season could have derailed Town’s return to the Championship but three straight wins mean they will go into the weekend occupying one of the two automatic promotion places.

Grayson, who admits to still wanting to bring in a striker on loan, said: “We always said we were not a one-man team. Jordan would have been the first to acknowledge that.

“Maybe we have played a different style of football without Jordan here. Other people have had to take responsibility and come to the party. They have had to take the opportunities for themselves.

“Whether that is in front of goal or supplying goals for people, we have had to adjust. Hence why we made the decision to sell Jordan and bring the players in we have brought in so far.”

Town, who will tomorrow again be without Adam Hammill through injury at home to Watford, have made the rest of the Championship sit up and take note with back-to-back 3-1 wins on the road at Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool.

The manner of Monday’s televised triumph at Bloomfield Road was particularly impressive with the performance of James Vaughan up front underlining again what a good signing the Norwich City loanee has been. In the wake of the win by the seaside, Grayson had intimated that Huddersfield may try to make the striker’s move permanent in January.

Asked yesterday by the Yorkshire Post if there was an update, the Town chief said: “James has had a good start but he is not our player.

“Norwich sent him out with the intention of getting fit and seeing how he does over a full season.

“I know I said on Monday that we might look to do something but that is out of our hands.

“Norwich sent him out for a reason and we will analyse the whole of the season.

“Hopefully, he can do well and anything after that can take care of itself.”

Jermaine Beckford, now training with the Leicester youth team, continues to be linked with a possible switch to Town after a planned move in August collapsed at the last minute.

On whether there will be a new arrival at the John Smith’s Stadium in the near future, Grayson said: “We have a process here that if we are going to do something, we do it privately.”
