Robins excited by thrilling end to the campaign

MARK ROBINS admits the Football League could not have scripted the conclusion of the Championship any better – although his only concern is avoiding any unnecessary drama in seven days time.

Robins, whose Huddersfield Town side have been embroiled in a grim relegation dogfight for several months, can take a giant step towards safety with victory at already-relegated Bristol City this afternoon and potentially take themselves out of the firing line ahead of next weekend’s White Rose derby with fellow strugglers Barnsley.

But given the Championship this season, nothing can be taken as read and while Robins expects further twists and turns at the bottom before this season’s end, his sole focus is on Town performing their side of the bargain to ensure second-tier football for another season at John Smith’s Stadium.

Robins said: “The Championship is an incredible league. But if you look at the other leagues as well, they are all similar.

“Usually there are two or three teams at the bottom of the table who are long gone, but this season has been totally different and really a case of everyone being able to beat everybody.

“Should we – or anybody down there – win their last two games, then you could finish mid-table or on the verge of the play-offs. It is ridiculous.

“I am sure the Football League are delighted with the way things have panned out this season.

“The Premier League last season was outstanding and everyone was talking about the finish to that.

“But this season, (Manchester) United have won it at a canter, whereas at both ends in our division, it’s tight. Easter is usually the pivotal weekend, but not a great deal happened this Easter, there is still so much for teams to play for.

“I am sure there will be more twists and turns and it’s interesting for everybody... even those who are not necessarily involved.”

Opponents Bristol City may be already relegated from the Championship, but the last thing Robins is expecting is an easy ride in what will be the West Countrymen’s final home game of the season.

City managed a 0-0 draw at Hull last weekend and Town know it won’t be easy.

Robins, pipped by Derek McInnes for the Ashton Gate post back in October 2011, said: “We will be playing against a side with no fear and playing for different reasons. There are no gimmies or teams who roll over in this league.

“Make no mistake, they have some quality players who can hurt you on the day and they will also be looking to put themselves in the shop window.”
