Robins hopeful Mellis brings positive impact

BARNSLEY manager Mark Robins wants Jacob Mellis to set Oakwell ‘on fire’ after his arrival on loan from Chelsea.

The former Sheffield United youngster has joined Barnsley until the end of the season along with West Ham United striker Frank Nouble and is likely to make his debut in tonight’s Championship game with Preston North End.

Robins said: “There were a few other clubs who wanted to take him. He is a real talent, technically very good, all he lacks is experience and that’s why he’s coming here.

“When I was at Leicester, Martin O’Neill brought in a young lad from Chelsea in similar circumstances – Muzzy Izzet – no-one had heard of him and he set the place on fire. I’m hoping Jacob does well.”

Midfielder Mellis, 20, is under contract with Chelsea until the summer of 2013 and recently made his debut as a substitute in the Champions League.

Nouble, 19, also played for the Chelsea youth side but snubbed the offer of a professional deal to sign a five-year contract with the Hammers.

Tonight’s game heralds the first return of striker Iain Hume since his switch from Barnsley to Preston last month.

The Canadian international was deemed surplus-to-requirements by Robins, but is still fondly regarded by Barnsley fans after battling back from a horrific head injury suffered in a derby against Sheffield United.
