Rochdale 3 Huddersfield Town 0: Terriers left frustrated by Dale's late double

HUDDERSFIELD endured a frustrating night at Spotland where League One newcomers Rochdale ran out winners.

Two late goals put a lop-sided slant on the scoreline, Town unfortunate not to emerge with a point.

The visitors threatened first, Anthony Pilkington picking out Joe Garner whose shot was blocked at the near post by Josh Lillis. The hosts went one better, making their first goalscoring opportunity count on six minutes. Brian Barry-Murphy's freekick from the left was met by Craig Dawson and his header was turned into the net at close range by Jason Kennedy.

A bright start to the second half raised the spirits of the 3,000 travelling supporters. It was one-way traffic for long periods as Town increased the pressure; Jamie McCombe left frustrated when he swept Pilkington's centre towards goal only to be denied by Lillis. Lee Peltier blasted into the side-netting while Lillis again robbed the visitors of a leveller when he stopped Garner's close-range attempt.

But the game was up for Town in the 87th minute when substitute Jean Louis Akpa Akpro ghosted past Clarke and lifted the ball beyond Alex Smithies. Within a minute Chris O'Grady rounded the Town stopper and crashed the ball home. Substitute Alan Lee had the ball in the net but was deemed offside, capping a miserable night for the visitors.
