The Reds head into today’s game with Keith Hill’s Rochdale in the relegation positions and without a win in five league matches and three defeats in their last four games, but Wilson is firmly looking at the bigger picture.

With the Reds basically a new side from last season and likely to be a work in progress for a good while yet, transition was always on the cards.

The Oakwell chief is equally emphatic that the club, despite spending nearly all of the past three decades in the second tier, had no divine right to believe that League One would be anything other than a hard slog to get out of.

He said: “There is so much left in the season. To be worried about anything and get carried away with things just astonishes me at times.

“It’s all doom and gloom; let’s look forward. We have got a fantastic time lying in front of us. But it not going to be easy to earn everything we want straight away.

“You don’t just click your fingers and everything is given to you. You have got to work hard for it.

“We have got a group of players who are prepared to do that and in six months time, we will look back and say: ‘What was all the worry about?’

“The lads and myself fully understand the areas we need to be better in and we will be.

“It is confidence, isn’t it? You win a few games and your confidence starts to rise and your decision-making becomes better. Our Achilles heel has been conceding too easily.

“There have been erratic performances in one or two areas and we need to eradicate that. If we do that, we will be fine.”
