Rochdale’s Hill tops Barnsley’s shortlist

Barnsley want Rochdale manager Keith Hill to succeed Mark Robins. They have made an official approach to the League One side to speak to Hill and have been granted permission.

Barnsley director Don Rowing said: “We are in the process of qualifying our shortlist and making an approach is the normal protocol. We don’t want fans to think this means an announcement is imminent but we we would like someone in, sooner rather than later.

“But we have to be mindful of dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s with an approach for another club’s manager. We want to take it step by step.

Rochdale have agreed for us to speak to Keith and hopefully we can get him in early next week for an interview.”

Robins resigned after less than two seasons at the club last Sunday after being placed on 12-months notice. It is believed a disagreement over the Championship club’s budget for next season hastened the departure.

Barnsley yesterday released a statement clarifying their financial position. They intend to conduct a root and branch review of their structure to ensure the focus of their resources is aimed at assembling the best possible squad to compete in the Championship.

Hill, 42, has spent five years working on limited resources at Rochdale. He guided the Spotlands club to promotion from League Two last season and to within three points of the League One play-offs this term.

Rowing added: “The fact that he’s been able to achieve success with a small club and on a limited budget, coupled with the issues he has had to overcome, namely losing players and rebuilding teams, is very impressive.”
