Rotherham United 1 Macclesfield 1: Le Fondre pounces to secure vital point for Millers

TOP scorer Adam Le Fondre bagged a late equaliser to rescue a point for the Millers in a dire encounter at rain-lashed Don Valley Stadium.

The striker scrambled home his 14th goal of the season five minutes from time after Macclesfield had grabbed a shock lead through Tyrone Barnett's well-placed effort a minute earlier.

Ronnie Moore's side struggled to break down the defence-minded visitors and this draw frustrated their efforts to close the gap on the top three in League Two.

Both teams toiled in the poor conditions in the first half and the Millers failed to impose themselves despite having the wind behind them.

Le Fondre put an effort straight at goalkeeper Jose Veiga after seizing on a defensive mix-up. Jason Taylor and Kevin Ellison both chanced their arm from long-range but it was the visitors who had the clearest chance of the first period when Vinnie Mukendi mis-kicked in front of goal.

Despite trying to stifle the life out of the game, Macclesfield continued to look dangerous on the break after half-time. Hamza Bencheris stung the palms of Andy Warrington with a strong effort and Barnett also had the Rotherham stopper back-pedalling with a 25-yard lob that very nearly dipped in.

Mukendi put a free header wide before the match sprung into life late on.

Ryan Taylor headed against a post and Le Fondre had a shot brilliantly tipped over the bar by Veiga before the goals finally arrived.
