Rotherham United 2 Lincoln City 1: Cresswell grabs late Millers winner

A regular scorer and a first-timer enabled Rotherham to get their season off to a winning start.

It was perhaps no surprise that Adam Le Fondre – who got 30 goals last season as Rotherham went to the League Two play-off final – should get off the mark.

But the winning goal three minutes from time went to the new captain Ryan Cresswell, part of an entirely new Rotherham back four after injuries had hit them.

Local lad Cresswell, who stood on the terraces as a youngster

at Millmoor cheering his favourites on, was overjoyed to head the winner from Nicky Law's cross.

"It's just a fantastic feeling," said Cresswell. "It's my first game, I'm made captain as well and then getting the winning goal so late on.

"I'm on a real high but whilst I am delighted to score, the important thing was to win and we did well in view of having so many new players."

Cresswell was partnered by Exodus Geohaghon due to Nick Fenton being out whilst injuries to both right-backs, Johnny Mullins and Dale Tonge, meant manager Ronnie Moore brought in Dean Holden on loan from Shrewsbury last Thursday.

But if Rotherham followers were unfamiliar with the newcomers, which included striker Tom Elliott, on loan from Leeds United, they were certainly no strangers to Le Fondre doing what he did with the season just seven minutes old.

When Kevin Ellison's shot was cleared off the line, it was Le Fondre who reacted the quickest to fire the loose ball into the back of the net.

Ellison had a goal-bound shot blocked just before half-time but Lincoln improved after winger Mustapha Carayol equalised with a deflected angled shot seven minutes after half-time.
