Barker, 41, had three spells as a player with the Millers and scored 13 goals in 153 league games.

The former striker, who was born in Sheffield, is expected to work alongside boss Paul Warne should he accept a move back to the New York Stadium.

Barker joined League One side Charlton in December 2016 to join up with Karl Robinson, who he assisted when the pair were at MK Dons.

He is set to leave The Valley at the end of the season alongside coach Simon Clark.

Rotherham have already been relegated from the Championship after a dire season at the bottom of the table.

Warne was made permanent boss of the Millers earlier this month.
