Jones returns to the club where he made his name and started his career in the early noughties, with Alex managed by former Millers player Dave Artell.

The 33-year-old, who joined Rotherham in the summer of 2018 on a free transfer from Sunderland, has played just five times for the Millers in the Championship this term - incorporating two starts - with his contract due to expire in June.

The departure of Jones follows on from the loan exits of fellow senior players Kyle Vassell and Mickel Miller to Fleetwood Town and Northampton Town respectively, with manager Paul Warne seeking to free up space in his 25-man squad and also provide himself with room for manoeuvre in the transfer market.

The Millers chief is keen on bringing in a couple of additions to boost his options in key areas for the second half of the campaign.

United have yet to bring any new signings so far in the January window.

Speaking after Tuesday's game with Stoke, Warne said: “I just think we need a little bit of help in the window to strengthen because if that (Stoke) was a game on a Wednesday night and we had to play again on the Saturday, it is nearly impossible to get recovered in time."
