Despite the Millers’ parlous position at the foot of the Championship, the impact made by Warne in terms of improving the spirit, organisation and resolve among the playing staff has been noteworthy.

Even though the club look increasingly destined to be playing League One football next season, Warne has still made a favourable impression.

He was handed the role for the rest of the season last month and Stewart this week indicated that the 43-year-old is a firm contender for the long-term position and that he would have no problem giving him the post if he continued to impress – and wanted it.

On potentially remaining as manager in the longer term, Warne, reassured by Stewart that he will have a role at the club – even if he is not in charge next season – said: “My views haven’t changed a great deal. From day one, I said I did not see myself as a full-time manager.

“I possibly still think that. (But) I have always said I would do it for as long as the chairman wants me to.

“If we have a chat and he endorses the fact he thinks I am the best man for the job – and if I think I am the best man for the job; at the moment, I am not sure – then I would do it.

“All I want is for this club to do well. If someone has got a person who can come in and do a better job than me, then I would endorse that. “

Meanwhile, the Millers have brought in ex-Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday backroom staff member Ross Burbeary as the club’s interim fitness coach, as Warne concentrates on his duties overseeing the first team.

On the move to recruit Burbeary, who has spent time working in the USA with NHL ice hockey side Buffalo Sabres, Warne said: “He worked at Nottingham Forest for a few years, recently he has been in Buffalo in the States.

“I sort of know him from before; he contacted me, he lives locally so it is a no-brainer.

“I need all hands on deck. I have probably spread myself a bit too thin recently so he is a handy addition.

“He is on a weekly contract until the end of the season and see where we go from there.”
