Rotherham United v Brighton: Will Vaulks back in Warne's good graces after switch

PAUL WARNE believes that Rotherham United might have dropped onto something after switching Will Vaulks to right back.

The midfielder may have made unfortunate headlines after scoring an unlucky weekend own goal against Aston Villa, but Warne feels that it should not detract from Vaulks’ impressive showing in an unaccustomed role on the right-hand side of defence, slotting in for the injured Stephen Kelly.

Vaulks is set to be handed another chance to impress there tonight against Brighton, where the Millers will not be short of support from rival Yorkshire clubs Huddersfield Town, Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday – all hoping that the hosts can follow Nottingham Forest’s lead and take points from the second-placed visitors.

Paying tribute to Vaulks, seeking a renaissance at the Millers after asking to go out on loan in January due to a lack of starts, Warne said: “He was impressive. He was aggressive and saw two wingers off, which always goes down well with the fans. It might be his best position. I like his attitude. He just wants to play.”

Revealing that he also had no issue with Vaulks’ earlier request for a loan move, the Millers boss added: “I am never going to have a problem with a player who knocks on my door and says that because playing is what they are paid to do. He is a really good lad.”

Kelly is set to be ruled out for the next three weeks with a calf injury, with goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell sidelined for at least a month with a finger problem, which could end his season if he requires an operation.

Meanwhile, Millers top-scorer Danny Ward is a doubt for tonight’s game with concussion.

Warne, who says that he is speaking with representatives of loan defender Semi Ajayi – with the Millers keen to retain him next season – said: “He took a crack between his shoulder blades on Saturday and his vision went and he felt dizzy.

“It is a concussion injury, so that will put a massive doubt on his availability. I don’t think anyone can criticise Danny’s attitude this season, he has been playing with an arm injury for god knows how long.”

Dexter Blackstock (knee) remains sidelined.
