Rotherham United v Torquay United: Haber snubs Millers as Moore hunts for striker

ROTHERHAM United manager Ronnie Moore has failed in a bid to bring Canadian international striker Marcus Haber to the Don Valley Stadium.

Moore had been given permission to speak with Haber by West Bromwich Albion but lost out to League One side Exeter City in the race for his services.

Haber, who had trials with Leeds United two summers ago, only joined the Baggies last month from Vancouver Whitecaps but has yet to figure for the Championship side.

Moore allowed striker Drewe Broughton to join Lincoln City on loan at the start of the week and wanted to bolster his attack ahead of the back-to-back home games against Torquay United, tonight, and Shrewsbury Town on Monday.

"I am still looking to bring in someone a bit diferent to Drewe and different to what we have already got," said Moore. "I am looking for someone who is lively with pace and who has a proven goalscoring record. Unfortunately, this move backfired – it was the lure of League One football – but someone else will come in, there is no doubt about that."

Victory tonight will lift the Millers back into the top three automatic promotion spots and Moore says his players are full of confidence again after having their pride jolted by two defeats against rock-bottom Darlington.

"We are still in a great position to go up," he stressed. "Obviously everyone was bitterly disappointed to lose those two games but we have won four of our last six games and don't need any help from anyone else.

"Those six dropped points could have made a big difference to the league table but that is history now and the question I am asking the players is how many clean sheets can we keep between now and the end of the season?

"Our next two games will be difficult for two very different reasons; Torquay are fighting for their lives and Shrewsbury are breathing down our necks in the race for promotion.

"Only one team in the whole division has been consistent and that is Rochdale," he added. "But I am hoping we have had our wobble now and I am looking for six points from these next two games."

Torquay's line-up tonight will include defender Guy Branston who spent five years playing for the Millers during Moore's first reign as manager.

Branston, now 31, helped the club win back-to-back promotions and also scored the club's first goal back at Championship level.

He joined Torquay last month from Burton Albion and has now played for a total of 16 different clubs since starting his career with hometown club Leicester City 11 years ago.

Moore said: "It will be nice to see Guy back and I will wish him all the best after the game. He did ever so well for us during the good old days, he always gave everything and was a whole-hearted player."

Last six games: Millers WWLLWW, Torquay LDLDLL.
