Adams may be kept waiting to transfer training verve to pitch

STEVE EVANS has described new signing Nicky Adams’s first week at the club as “sensational”, but it still might not be enough to earn him a starting spot at Colchester United this afternoon.

The former Bury and Leicester winger arrived from Evans’s former club Crawley Town for an undisclosed fee on transfer deadline day and has already created a hugely positive impression with his performances in training.

But with the Millers one of the form sides in League One, Adams may have to be patient with his new side seeking their seventh away win in eight matches in Essex this afternoon, and having lost just twice on the road in the league this term.

Evans said: “Nicky was sensational in training on Monday. But he will have known last Saturday if he watched (Kieran) Agard and (Ben) Pringle that he’s got to be sensational when he is out on the pitch.

“He knows the level we expect, but to be fair, he was outstanding on Monday and continued it all the way through all week.”

The Millers are in rude health heading into today’s game, buoyed by some positive results on the pitch, a clean bill of health in the treatment room and an embarrassment of riches at Evans’s disposal.

The only worries Evans has are selection issues. “We came into the transfer window in good shape and left it that way, but selection-wise, we are a lot stronger.

“This week is probably one of the few weeks of the season where we’ve had everyone contesting. We know some might need competitive action, but to have everyone physically fit in your squad and available if selected is fantastic with a very difficult 17 games to go.

“It keeps players on their toes and performances at the top end. There is really nothing better than if a player goes into a little lull or his performance just dips a little, that you have someone of equal if not more ability who is chomping at the bit to come and play.”
