Arnason swaps Rotherham United for Malmo

Rotherham United’s Icelandic international Kari Arnason has joined Swedish club Malmo for an undisclosed fee.

The 32-year-old, who has been part of two promotion campaigns and a season of survival in the Championship at the New York Stadium, has signed a two-year deal at Malmo.

Malmo will be involved in the Champions League qualifiers next month.

Arnason joined the Millers from Aberdeen in June 2012 and made 130 appearances for the club. He also entered the club’s history books as the most capped international player while at Rotherham.

Arnason said: “I want to play for Malmo, it is the biggest club in Scandinavia right now and when the opportunity came I was very happy.”

Millers manager Steve Evans said: “My first thoughts are to thank Kari Arnason for the loyalty, performances and dare I say it friendship he has given me over the last three years, since I convinced him to join the Millers from Aberdeen.

“The big fella will always have a place in the hearts of the Millers faithful, after playing such a huge part in the success this football club has enjoyed over the last three seasons.

“The lad will always be welcome back here, and on behalf of everyone at Rotherham United FC I would like to wish Kari every success at both Malmo FF.”
