Dagenham and Redbridge 5-0 Rotherham United - Millers floored by five-star Daggers

STEVE EVANS’ Rotherham United endured a torrid afternoon as their recent upturn was checked in horrific fashion in a 5-0 mauling in Essex.

Dwight Gayle and Luke Howell netted two goals apiece for John Still’s rampant Daggers, who pulled the visiting defence to pieces for most of the afternoon.

The hosts signalled a sign of things to come in the fifth minute when they took the lead when Gayle converted Jake Reed’s cross with United caught napping.

And Daggers doubled their tally in the 35th minute after some slack play from debutant loan player Luke Rooney, who only joined the club on loan from Swindon Town on Friday.

Rooney was robbed in possession by impressive left-back Femi Ilesanmi, whose bucaneering run ended in him crossing to Howell, whose twenty-yarder beat veteran Andy Warrington.

The Millers could not find a foothold back in proceedings and they imploded in the final 15 minutes to concede three goals, turning a bad afternoon into a catasphoric one.

Howell made it 3-0, sidefooting home after more good work from Ilesanmi before Medy Elito shot through a crowded area to add a fourth with ten minutes left.

The coup de grace was provided in the 90th minute through Gayle, who tapped in.
