Evans backing Posh to be League One winners

With the League One season just eight games in, it is a bold prediction from Evans, whose Millers side host Peterborough United.

Posh, relegated from the Championship last term, have kept the majority of their squad together and sit second in the table.

They have 19 points from eight games with only Leyton Orient bettering that total after a stunning maximum 24-point haul.

Many pundits believe Wolverhampton Wanderers to be favourites for the title, but Evans picked out Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough in July and is sticking with his prediction.

“I said back in July I thought Peterborough United would be league champions and I have seen nothing that tells me anything different to that,” said Evans.

“I have seen all the teams at the top.

“I think we are playing the champions-elect and this is a real benchmark for us.

“Given how they play and how we play, it will be 7-7, maybe 8-7 to us.

“It should be a fantastic game to watch.”

Rotherham, too, have made an impressive start to life in League One.

Unbeaten so far, their run has included the scalps of big-city rivals Sheffield Wednesday (in the League Cup) and Sheffield United.

Victory today would give Rotherham 19 points from nine matches, above the two points per game ratio which is often enough to win promotion.

“The players are on top of the world,” said former Crawley Town manager Evans.

“I think we can call it a steady start, but winning big games change things.

“If we win (today) it will be a brilliant start, that’s how fine the margins are.

“If somebody tells me on Saturday night we have played nine games and are one point above an average of two points per game, that can only represent a fantastic start.

“If we don’t win it stays a steady start.”
