Evans gets go-ahead to strengthen Millers

A BUSY start to January is in the offing at Rotherham United with Steve Evans on the verge of adding another international player to his squad.

Evans is to meet a player with 30 caps tomorrow, following today’s sell-out encounter with promotion-rivals Port Vale.

The Millers are also close to agreeing a permanent deal for Peterborough midfielder Lee Frecklington.

As well as recruiting, they are also having to fend off interest in Icelandic international Kari Arnason, with bids from two clubs already rejected.

“The interest from those clubs is not welcome and the player is not for sale,” said Evans.

Tony Stewart (chairman) tells me his discussions with Peterborough United continue regarding the purchase of Lee Frecklington.”

The midday postponement of Saturday’s game at Bristol Rovers left Evans angry that the majority of Millers fans had already made the trip to the south-west.

It also increases his determination to ensure they reward their supporters at the New York Stadium today.

“We have a full house on Boxing Day and I will do all I can to make sure we put in a performance that makes our fans proud of the team,” said Evans.

“Port Vale are a quality team so our task is a tough one but the prize is worth fighting for.”

On the postponement, he added: “It’s a great shame our supporters did not get any advance warning the match was in serious doubt. They have had to endure late call-offs at Accrington, Notts County and again on Saturday and I feel for them. Something has to be done to correct these things happening, in modern-day football. It is not acceptable.”
