The Millers, who went down 3-0 at Reading on Tuesday, could be provided with a tonic prior to their first trip to S6 in the Championship since August 2002, with Evans working on an incoming deal today.

On the prospect of a signing, Evans said: “Maybe. We have been given permission by another manager to let the two chief executives if an agreement can be reached.

“Let me tell supporters now I am not going to cut across this one. If it’s right, we are bringing him in.”

Evans pulled the plug on an incoming deal at the 11th hour last week, stating that he potentially feared that his arrival, on big-money wages, could upset the dressing room balance.

Kari Arnason is a slight doubt ahead of Saturday’s derby with a toe injury.
