Evans is planning to ‘tweak’ Millers squad

The Millers are riding high in League Two and are through to the third round of the FA Cup after Notts County became the second League One scalp they have taken in the competition.

Evans oversaw a big overhaul of players in the summer, but says his policy in January will not be as wide-ranging.

“It won’t be a big January, we will only be tweaking,” said Evans. “But the tweaking we will do will be the adding of quality.

“We’re already in the process of talking to clubs, but that’s all it is at the moment.”

Rotherham have won four of their last seven in the league since an uncharacteristic 5-0 reverse at Dagenham and Redbridge in 
November.

Evans believes the inconsistency is slowly but surely being eradicated from his side’s performances, but believes there is more to come from a team who sit fourth, two points off the automatic promotion places.

“We can’t kid ourselves, we are far from the finished article,” he said.

“This is still a relatively new team. When you look at the squad that went out at Notts County there were probably only two or three players who had been at the club before this season.”

The defeat of Notts County was one of the best results of the season, but it was the manner of the performance that pleased Evans.

“We could have won 6-0, never mind 3-0,” he said.

“They’re a team that’s up at the top of League One, and that’s two we’ve now beaten when you add Stevenage into that mix.

“That speaks volumes for the character and ability of the players, and the level they want to be competing at.”

Today’s opponents find themselves in the bottom two but with a new and experienced manager in John Ward now in the dugout.

Evans said: “They’re a struggling team but by no means a struggling club. There could be close to 10,000 in there (today).

“They were third favourites for promotion so it shows what a difficult division this is.

“Their crowd is noisy and they’ll get behind them. We have to deal with everything they throw at us.

“But the boys are buzzing and we are ready for it.”
