Evans pledges Millers will hit back

ROTHERHAM UNITED winger Gareth Evans is adamant the players must start to repay the fans following a string of disappointing results.

The Millers have lost their last four league games – the latest a 5-2 hammering at Bristol Rovers.

It has left Rotherham languishing in mid-table with 18 points from 13 games and Evans is clear results must improve – starting with today’s game against fifth-placed Shrewsbury.

“The fans have been fantastic and to see them there at Bristol Rovers was great,” he said. “They’ve got behind us and we need to start paying them back with results on the pitch. Until we do that, then we’re not going to be happy.”

Despite their stuttering form, Evans believes Rotherham can enjoy a successful season.

Many pundits have been surprised by their mediocre league position but there remains plenty of time to mount a recovery.

“There’s plenty of ambition here and I firmly believe we can turn this around and get in the top half, the play-offs and ultimately go up,” declared Evans. “But we need to be challenging and to start doing the basics right.

“Until we do that then we’re not going to get anything.”

Evans added the players must take collective responsibility for poor results.

“It’s not just one person individually who is making mistakes,” he said.

“It’s us as a team; we’re all in it together and trying to improve by sticking together.”

Evans is confident of a positive outcome today.

“You often find that teams play well against the better sides and tend to up their game. Hopefully, that’s what we can do as these results can’t carry on.”
