Fans asked for striker choice as Millers widen their scouting net

ROTHERHAM UNITED are going continental in their bid for new talent.

The go-ahead League Two outfit, who moved into the New York Stadium last summer and have medium-term plans of returning to the Championship, are in the process of establishing a team of scouting contacts in Europe, manager Steve Evans has revealed.

On spreading their net into Europe, he added: “We’re putting an infrastructure in place and we’re talking near-Europe – such as France but including Germany. You have to tap into all possibilities.

“We also have representatives in Scotland and throughout this country.”

Evans is enlisting the help of supporters in his quest for a striker to crystalise their promotion dreams and has invited them to aid his search for an elusive forward with the X-Factor.

Evans, who has revealed he failed in a recent move to sign Rochdale forward Ashley Grimes, said: “If there’s a young striker out there somewhere, say about 21, who we can get for £250,000 and he has got re-saleable value, then we will take him and my invitation going out there is that I will listen to all suggestions.

“We continue to scour around but you never, ever know what can be thrown up.

“What I am doing in putting it out there to our fans is inviting suggestions. You just never know; someone may come up with a name, somebody we may have overlooked.”

Evans, whose side host Bristol Rovers, is backing new defensive signing Claude Davis to stiffen a back four which has not recorded a shut-out in their past eight games on home soil. “We have given away too many soft goals and when we have looked again and analysed them, there are some soft ones.

“It is important to stop conceding. There’s been no clean sheet here since the end of October and we need to be more clinically defensively. Claude will talk and organise and I believe that we will benefit from his presence. He’s a defender first and foremost and he will put everything into that defending.”
