Huddersfield capture Woods for his versatility

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN have signed Dunfermline Athletic right-back Calum Woods on a two-year deal.

The 24-year-old has chosen to swap the Scottish Premier League – Dunfermline romped to promotion last season – for a tilt at trying to win promotion from League One with the Terriers.

Manager Lee Clark has had the former Liverpool junior watched on a number of occasions and believes the new signing will fit in well at the Galpharm Stadium.

He said: “We are delighted to make Calum our first signing of the summer. His versatility was a big factor in signing him. He has the ability to play anywhere across the back four and is comfortable on either foot.

“He was brought up in the Liverpool Academy and that shows as he is very comfortable on the ball and has a good range of passing.

“We have watched him for a long time. All the scouts and coaches who I have sent to cast their eye over him have come back to me with positive feedback. He is only a young lad who I believe will fit in very well amongst the current crop of players we have here.”

Woods moved north to Dunfermline in 2006 and made 37 appearances last season as the club won the First Division title by 10 points.

Benik Afobe, who spent much of last season on loan at Huddersfield from Arsenal, has signed a contract extension with the Premier League club.

The 18-year-old England Youth international helped the Terriers to the League One play-off final during his seven-month stay in Yorkshire.

Rotherham United manager Andy Scott expects both Nicky Law and Ryan Taylor to leave the club this summer.

Law has been the subject of a couple of bids from rival clubs, one of which has been accepted, while Taylor has turned down the offer of a new deal.

Scott said: “With Nicky, we accepted a fee for him from another League Two club.

“We gave a timeline for that to happen but he hasn’t signed for them. Whether that deal is dead, I don’t know. We have had an offer from a League One club but that didn’t meet the valuation.

“We are still anticipating that Nicky will be leaving but it is a case of whether we can agree a deal with the club or have to go to tribunal.

“With Ryan, we have had a couple of offers from Championship clubs for him so we are anticipating that he will go to another club.

“I believe that he is meeting a couple of clubs this week so I imagine there will be some movement there.”
