Interviews on hold as Stewart hunts for new Millers manager

TONY STEWART expects interviews for the vacant Rotherham United manager’s job to begin early next week.

The Millers sacked Andy Scott 11 days ago after a disappointing campaign in League Two this season.

United were expected to be among the sides challenging for automatic promotion but are instead well adrift of even the top seven and seem destined for a mid-table finish.

Around 60 applications have flooded in to the Don Valley Stadium since Scott’s sacking and it is understood a five-man shortlist has been drawn up.

Chairman Stewart last night told the Yorkshire Post: “We were hoping to get the interviews under way this week but it looks more likely that it will be next week.

“Of the 60 or so applications that have come in for the job, I would say around 30 are good quality with the rest being dross.”

Among those linked with the post are former Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws, Martin Allen and Mark Robins, who did such an impressive job at the Don Valley Stadium before being lured away by Barnsley.

Steve Thompson, assistant coach at Blackpool, is another to be linked, while sources in Sussex have suggested Crawley Town manager Steve Evans could be in the running.

However, when asked last night if the controversial former Boston United manager was on the shortlist, Stewart replied: “He’s not one I have heard mentioned.”

The number of applicants wanting to take charge of a club in their fifth season in League Two can be explained by the potential for lift-off at the Millers ahead of this summer’s return to the town.

United expect to move into the state-of-the-art New York Stadium in July and with Stewart’s board having backed previous managers in the transfer market in recent years, the potential is clear for all to see.

Stewart added: “It is a good job and a great opportunity for someone to make a big impact.

“This time next week, we should have seen at least a couple of candidates so will know a lot more than we do right now.”
