‘Little and Large’ partnership brings smiles back for Millers

Both ended their barren streaks in front of goal on an evening to savour for the Millers, who claimed their first Championship home win since October 17 in majestic style with a 4-2 slaying of Bolton.

Recent signing Sammon, whose previous goal this term came for Ipswich Town on September 25, tapped home his first effort in Millers’ colours to put them 2-0 ahead on 23 minutes on a night when the hosts moved five points clear of the drop zone.

Derbyshire, who provided assists for Sammon’s strike and Paul Green’s killer third, was afforded his own choice moment on 56 minutes when he fired home a stunning 25-yarder – to start casting aside a different campaign with his first league goal since joining last summer.

Sammon says there is no reason why he and Derbyshire cannot form a successful little-and-large forward partnership and prove themselves a real nuisance to Championship defenders after bossing Bolton’s backline.

“We were a handful and linked up together and I am absolutely delighted that both of us got on the scoresheet as well,” said Sammon. “As strikers, that is what you want. It is even sweeter when it leads to us getting three points and it was a big confidence boost.

“Matt’s was an absolute cracking goal on his left foot. As a striker, you can go through a spell where you haven’t scored and it can get in your head a little bit and you can get frustrated.

“Credit to him, he was fantastic not only with his goal, which he took really well.”

Sammon admitted he was relieved to find the back of the net again after such a liong wait.

“For me, this is a real fresh start for me to go and improve and better myself,” he said. “Getting my first goal for the club is massive.”
