Manager Scott attempting to rally support from the missing Millers

The Millers have averaged just 3,697 for the first five league games of the season – only 30 up on last season’s home average – but enjoyed a bumper gate of 6,737 for the midweek derby against Sheffield United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Scott feels the improved atmosphere helped make for a better game although it could not prevent his side suffering a third consecutive defeat.

“It’s nice to be able to play under floodlights in front of a big crowd. The atmosphere was excellent and that contributed to a good game,” he said. “It’s difficult at the Don Valley with the lack of atmosphere but we need as many fans as possible to come down and watch us and make as much noise as possible to try and lift the atmosphere.

“We know it’s our responsibility to lift the fans as well but we will continue to play attractive, attacking football to make sure fans want to watch us, and give them some good results.”

The Millers are hoping to sign a new defender on loan before today’s game after Mark Bradley was ruled out for three months with a dislocated shoulder.

With Troy Brown on Welsh Under-21 duty and captain Ryan Cresswell ruled out with damaged ankle ligaments, Scott has a shortage of options at centre-back. Midfielder Ben Pringle and goalkeeper Andy Warrington are pressing for starts.

Commercial director Steve Coakley is to join Sheffield United. He was previously employed by Sheffield Wednesday.
