Rotherham went behind to an eighth-minute goal from League Two’s top goalscorer Justin Richards.

There was a hint of offside about the goal with Millers goalkeeper Andy Warrington complaining that Cleveland Taylor was in an offside position when the ball was played down the line.

But the assistant referee’s flag stayed down and Taylor’s cross was hammered home from close range by Richards.

Rotherham put in a much-improved performance in the second half and came closest to earning an equaliser when Lewis Grabban struck the cross bar.

“We just can’t defend,” blasted manager Andy Scott.

“I’m sick of saying the same thing. It just drives me absolutely mad that players aren’t prepared to do their jobs and put their bodies on the line to defend.

“The back four got dominated in the first half because we didn’t compete and then we had the most one-sided second half you are ever going to get in a football match and yet I was still worried that they were going to score another goal.

“They just don’t seem to be able to do the things that we ask them to do. For some reason their whole mentality goes out of the window because they can’t do what I am asking them to do.

“I’m looking to make changes, trying to make changes and I’ve got to make changes because you can only give people so many chances because they either don’t want to do it or can’t do it, so that’s that.”

The defeat was their fourth straight in the league and they have now gone six games without finding the net.

That run has meant they have fallen from the automatic promotion places into 11th spot on 18 points, two below the play-off places and five adrift of the top three.
