Millers chief Evans now forced to switch targets

ROTHERHAM UNITED manager Steve Evans is prioritising the addition of a winger and striker to complete his summer transfer business before 11pm on Monday.

He has spent many painstaking hours on the phone trying to set up deals this week, with his work likely to step up again after today’s game with Brentford.

Evans, who this week missed out on Watford pair Lewis McGugan and Lloyd Dyer, insists he will only shop for quality players who will make a difference to his side after completing a plethora of deals in the early part of the summer.

Evans wanted to sign the Hornets pair on loan, but was told they are not available for transfer at this juncture, forcing the Scot to switch targets. “We would like to get a wide player and someone up front, but we are in terrific shape. Frazer Richardson, Paul Green and Ryan Hall will all return to the group and will be available for selection after the weekend and if we add one or two more, then we would be pleased,” he said.

“I am trying to get players in. I would prefer permanent signings and so would any other manager, but if we need to go into the loan market, we will take that.

“We do not want more of the same type of player we’ve already got, we want people who bring something new.”

The Millers completed an impressive double over Brentford last term, including a marvellous 3-0 late-season success at the New York Stadium, and Bees’ chief Mark Warburton admits memories of that game still linger.

He said: “We lost 3–0 to them last time, and that was a disappointing performance.

“The boys knew that night that we were outplayed. But we now recognise the threat that they pose. Rotherham are an organised and formidable outfit, so it will be a tough game”.
