A deal had been set up with the unnamed player who also has considerable Championship experience, but the Millers chief, after mulling over the move, says he elected not go through with the deal, mindful that news of his weekly wages could potentially unsettle the dressing room.

He said: “They (players) have to meet the wage demands we are happy to pay.

“There is certainly one in the past few days who certainly did not offer value for money. Although the chairman might have been keen to see it over the line, I was the one who said I am also keen to see my dressing room right.

“And that is why there is a fantastic relationship between the head man and the manager.”

The Millers report a relatively clean bill of health for perhaps one of the first occasions this season ahead of their home clash with Middlesbrough

Richard Wood and Conor Newton are back in full training and got some game-time this week.

But despite their considerable squad options, Evans is unwilling to let out any fringe players until the international break, mindful of how the club have three games in the next week.
