Patterson continuing to defend the Millers’ fort

AS the Rotherham United board prepare to step up their search for a new manager next week, caretaker boss Darren Patterson has just one thought on his mind: Three points.

The Millers have been inundated with applications since Andy Scott’s sacking almost a fortnight ago and, as revealed in Thursday’s Yorkshire Post, chairman Tony Stewart expects the interview process to get under way in earnest early next week.

More than 60 candidates have been whittled down to a shortlist that the club has spent the past few days poring over.

While that process has been going on, Patterson has remained focused on today’s visit of Hereford United for what may, depending on how impressive the candidates are next week, prove to be his last in charge.

Patterson said: “I am realistic enough to know it could be (my last). But I am not approaching it in that manner. My thought process will be to win against Hereford and then prepare on Monday for the next game.

“If I am told differently then I will react accordingly.”

The number of applications that have come in since Scott’s departure is a reflection of how attractive a prospect taking over a club about to move into a new state-of-the-art stadium is.

Chairman Stewart said: “It is a good job and a great opportunity for someone to make a big impact. Everyone in Rotherham is excited about the prospect of moving into the new stadium.

“We have seen what impact a move can make with other clubs in the past and providing we get the right manager then there is no reason why Rotherham can’t do the same. We all want the same thing – success.”
