Paul Warne happy to stay patient as Rotherham United chase Danny Barlaser’s return

ROTHERHAM UNITED manager Paul Warne has reiterated that he would love to bring Dan Barlaser back to the Millers – but not at the expense of him being broken-hearted if he leaves boyhood club Newcastle United.

Warne is awaiting developments regarding Barlaser, 23, with Magpies boss Steve Bruce to make a decision on his future shortly.

On former loanee Barlaser, who played for Newcastle in midweek, Warne said: “If he does not get included in the 25-man squad at the end of the month, then I will move very quickly to get him here.

“I am making no bones about the fact that I want to sign him, but I also sincerely want him to play for Newcastle. I do not want him to come here with a broken heart thinking this is a bad second place.

“We will have to watch his space. They might extend his contract and then loan him out and say, ‘Right, come up one level’.

“In fairness, he has had two brilliant seasons, but League One and the Premier League are like two different sports.

“I am not speaking on behalf of Newcastle, but they might think he needs a season in the Championship, or they may just keep him in the building and see how it goes. I don’t really know and I don’t want to push a door that has not got a latch on.”

Meanwhile, Warne says that striker Jamie Proctor will have to decide if he wants to fight for a place or head for pastures new, with the arrival of George Hirst having pushed him further down the pecking order.

With strong options across many areas, some other squad players are also likely to have to make a similar decision ahead of next month’s deadline.

Warne added: “George Hirst has come in to play. I have not had Procs in either of my two squads, (but) Procs has trained really well and looked really good in fairness to him.

“But at this moment in time, and I have said this to Procs, he is fifth-choice striker. So he has a decision to make if he wants to stay and compete.

“We don’t know what is going to happen in four game’s time. He could be starting so I do not want to say things that could bite me.

“But in four or five week’s time when the window shuts, he might still be fifth-choice striker and cannot get anywhere near the squad and that is going to be the same for a few of the lads.

“There is a few on the periphery who may get an opportunity and (if) they wait they might go in January.”
