Peterborough v Rotherham United: Evans sets sights high as he hits milestone

The Millers chief completed the first part of his remit with promotion out of League Two and, with the club comfortably in a play-off berth, Evans and his team have the chance to emulate Ronnie Moore’s class of 1999-2000 and 2000-01 by recording back-to-back promotions to the Championship.

It has been a joyous ride for Evans and the Millers and he is confident there are several more stops to arrive at.

Evans said: “In my 22 months here, I have had three opportunities to leave, all to go to a higher level and I have never once given serious consideration to whether I’d do it.

“I have only achieved a small part of what I thought I could when I walked through the doors and our chairman talks to me every day about how we can be better on and off the pitch.”

On where the Millers could be in another century of games, he added: “It could be in the Championship looking towards the Premiership.

“I base that on recent times, on the likes of Blackpool and Wigan Athletic. In the cold light of day, who is the biggest club between us three?

“I think the Millers, although supporters of those clubs will think those clubs.

“But I think a realistic objective in that timescale is to be playing in the Championship. But when we play there, I know Tony Stewart will be having conversations about the Premiership. That’s the nature of our leader.”
