Plymouth Argyle 0 Rotherham United 1: Millers can’t afford to become too complacent, warns boss Evans

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans is sweating on the fitness of Lee Frecklington and Michael O’Connor ahead of Saturday’s potential promotion decider.

The duo limped off in Saturday’s impressive win at Argyle, which leaves the Millers needing to avoid defeat against Aldershot this weekend to clinch automatic promotion to League One.

That is because they lead fourth-placed Cheltenham Town by two points, and have a superior goal difference, so a point would be sufficient.

“Both Lee Frecklington and Michael O’Connor came off injured, that is a real worry but it will be a couple of days before we know if they will be available for next Saturday,” said Evans.

“The good news is that Daniel Nardiello and David Noble will be 100 per cent fit after a full week’s training.

“I had both on the bench yesterday but did not really want to involve either unless I needed to and thankfully we managed to let both lads watch from the bench; plus Danny Kearns will also get a full weeks training and should be in contention come next Saturday.”

The only goal of the game at Argyle came in the second half, when Kieran Agard got on the end of Johnny Mullins’s knock-down.

Former Millers forward Reuben Reid twice spurned chances to bag an equaliser, but Rotherham held on to take a massive stride towards promotion.

Not that Evans is breaking out the champagne just yet, despite Aldershot needing a major swing in goal difference and results on Saturday to avoid dropping out of the Football League.

“There is still a lot of hard work to be done and everyone must stay focused for the end result to be as we want it,” he said.

“Complacency has no place in football and when it appears, it gets punished, but our squad seem to be very focused on our objectives.

“There will be a full stadium for the Aldershot match, indications are the sold-out signs will be in place within a few days.

“Our support has just been incredible all season and we will need them right behind us for every minute of the match next Saturday.

“They have stuck with us and, hopefully, we can reward them. but I am saying again we have a lot of work to do.”
