Police trawl 200 hours of CCTV after Rotherham United disorder

Several stewards were attacked during clashes at the home game against Millwall FC at the New York Stadium on Saturday.

A number of supporters attempted to reach supporters in other parts of the ground, leading to the attacks, South Yorkshire Police said.

Further disorder erupted as fans left the ground, when a number of stewards and police officers were injured.

Around 200 hours of footage have been collected from cameras inside the ground and officers from South Yorkshire Police are working with London’s Metropolitan Police Service to try and identify suspects.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Steven Ashmore said: “We have extensive footage available to us from inside the ground and work has already begun in earnest to identify those individuals involved.

“In addition to working with our colleagues in London, we will also be reaching out to media outlets who filmed the match to see if they will share their footage with us, as well as trawling CCTV cameras from across the town to ensure no stone is left unturned in our bid to bring those responsible to account.

“The actions of a few spoiled this event for many others and their behaviour will not be tolerated.

“I’d like to reassure the public of Rotherham that we are taking this incident incredibly seriously and if anyone has any information or footage that they wish to share with us then I would urge them to get in touch.”
