Police to warn ticketless Leeds United fans away from Rotherham derby

A “significant and highly-visible police presence” will be mounted in Rotherham before the 7.45pm kick-off, as well as in neighbouring Sheffield, “to provide reassurance to businesses, residents and shoppers”.

Chief Inspector Richard Butterworth, Silver Commander for the match, said: “I want to reassure the public in Rotherham and Sheffield that we will not tolerate any level of disorder or violence within South Yorkshire.

“We have jointly planned a large and robust operation for this match with West Yorkshire Police and British Transport Police and we will be able to provide a prompt and effective police response to any issues or concerns. We will not accept or stand for anyone intent on causing trouble or inciting violence.”

Several hundred police officers will be on duty, with officers also at Leeds train station, policing fans travelling to Rotherham without tickets.

Mr Butterworth added: “The match is completely sold out and there are very few pubs actually showing the event in Rotherham or Sheffield.

“I would strongly advise people without tickets to not travel into the town and consider making other arrangements to watch the game.

“I will ensure that we provide a safe and welcoming environment for fans who just want to attend and enjoy the game and endeavour that there is as little disruption as possible for people conducting their daily business in the town.”
