Pumping up volume ahead of trip to Villa

Today, it is back to the ‘bread and butter’ of League One football with the visit of Shrewsbury Town to the New York Stadium.

Evans was on a spying mission in midweek, preparing for the Millers’ juicy Capital One Cup tie against Villa next Wednesday, which is their reward for knocking out Sheffield Wednesday in the first round.

Now the Millers are hoping the fans will rally behind their unbeaten start to the season – they beat Crawley Town last weekend to follow up draws with Crewe and Preston – today.

“Our support has been nothing short of fantastic,” said Evans.

“I have said previously and maintain that for the team to be successful we need them with us every step of the way.

“The vocal support they give the team is brilliant and drives the lads on at key times.

“We need a big and noisy support at the New York on Saturday; these are the type of matches we lost last season.”

Shrewsbury have not enjoyed the best of openings to their campaign, but chalked up an impressive 2-0 win last week against Swindon Town and Evans is wary of their threat.

“They didn’t have the best of starts, but they’ve been struggling with injuries and they won 2-0 last week when it could have been more,” he said.

“They’ll believe that they can come here and win and, if we don’t perform to our maximum then, they can.”

Evans is hoping to bring in some new faces before the transfer window closes in 10 days.

“The transfer deadline is also getting nearer and I am hoping we can do some business,” said Evans, who hopes to have winger David Worrall back from injury today.

“The odd player or two may or may not leave, I will watch with interest to see what happens.”

Wednesday’s match at Villa Park is a rematch of the first League Cup final in 1961. Capital One are offering any Rotherham or Villa fans who attended the final a free pair of tickets for next week’s tie.
