Rotherham in five-man shortlist to replace axed Scott

ROTHERHAM United could appoint their new manager before this weekend’s visit of bottom-of-the-table Hereford United.

The Millers have been searching for a replacement after sacking Andy Scott earlier last week and have now drawn up a five-man shortlist with more interviews set to be held this week.

Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Crawley Town left the Millers nine points adrift of the play-off places in League Two with just seven games remaining.

With promotion now unlikely, that has not stopped nearly 50 applications from managers looking to take over at Don Valley Stadium. And with a move back to Rotherham and the New York Stadium this summer, the potential under ambitious chairman Tony Stewart is clear to see.

“We have received a lot of applications. Tony Stewart, myself and the board met to narrow that down to a manageable amount to interview,” chief operating officer Paul Douglas said.

“We have got the list down to five and those people have been contacted. We will arrange interviews during this week.

“We feel the right candidate is within the five we will talk to and there have been some very high-calibre applications.

“We could yet make an appointment this week.”

Mark Robins has been linked with a return to the Millers, while other names mentioned include former Owls boss Brian Laws, Peter Reid and Phil Brown.

Caretaker manager Darren Patterson was left to rue missed chances in the defeat to fellow play-off rivals Crawley on Saturday.

“Obviously we’re disappointed with the result,” Patterson said. “First-half we should be three or four, possibly more in front. We absolutely battered them, but we couldn’t convert our chances and we were done with a sucker punch.

“Some of the opportunities we’ve created were good chances. We should be taking some of them unfortunately and if we’d got the first I think we’d have gone on to win the game comfortably. It’s not just the strikers, we’re all responsible for getting the goals and we want to be scoring from other areas.”

Bournemouth assistant manager Russ Wilcox has been placed on “gardening leave”, the League One club have confirmed.

Wilcox, former No 2 to Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws, only joined the club in December last year and was assistant to former boss Lee Bradbury who left the Cherries on Sunday following discussions with chairman Eddie Mitchell.

A statement said: “AFC Bournemouth has placed Russ Wilcox on gardening leave for two weeks following the departure of Lee Bradbury. Wilcox will return to the Seward Stadium in a fortnight to discuss his future with the club.”

Youth team manager Paul Groves will take charge of tonight’s clash with Stevenage.
