The Millers have already received over 50 applications from candidates wishing to succeed Steve Evans who left on Monday, with Stewart highly-impressed by the calibre so far, which he has labelled as “outstanding.”

The Millers hierarchy could start to speak to candidates as early as Tuesday, Stewart revealed.

Stewart said: “This morning, I was told there were over 50 applicants and they are coming from home and abroad, from those young, old, experienced and those in jobs and out of jobs. We have a mixed bag.

“The quality is outstanding. There are big names and we have got a task to pick and shortlist first of all the person we will interview, starting next week.

“It’s a different level and class of managers.

“We have looked at one or two who seem to have caught our eye. I won’t say how many, but we are looking at gaps next week in the diary.

“And I have no doubt that we will be - probably from Tuesday onwards - sitting down and talking to these people who have put their names down.

“I think we will have a mixed bag of interviews with the young and the experienced. Our team will be talking and interviewing and I am one of a body of people.

“I do have a view, but others do as well and I will take that into account as I always have done.”

Meanwhile, Stewart has paid tribute to the work of Evans and despite differences between the pair in the future direction of the club - which precipitated his exit on Monday - he says the Scot left with ‘dignity.’

Stewart added: “I think we owe a lot to Steve Evans and Paul. They promised everything and delivered everything.

“I wish them all the best. I know they will do well in their careers and carry on being successful.

“Steve Evans came with dignity and left with dignity.”
