Rotherham United 1 AFC Wimbledon 0: Missed chances allow Millers to profit and edge closer to play-offs

Sam Wood’s 78th-minute strike proved to be the difference after the visitors had enjoyed the better of the chances earlier on.

Luke Moore had a number of opportunities to put the visitors ahead – the first one in the opening seconds when he blazed over the bar from just six yards out.

Danny Harrison forced a fine save from Seb Brown at the other ened with a fierce shot from the edge of the area.

Minutes later, Brown was called on to make an acrobatic stop after Harrison connected well with Dale Tonge’s cross.

Just after the half-hour mark, Sam Hatton found Lee Minshull, but his shot went inches wide of Conrad Logan’s goal.

After the break, the visitors enjoyed the greater possession and went close to opening the scoring through Moore, but his header trickled agonisingly wide of the post.

Jack Midson should have done better when he got his head to a cross from Ryan Jackson and the visitors were made to regret their sloppiness in front of goal in the 78th minute when Lewis Grabban pulled the ball back to Wood on the edge of the area, from where he unleashed a fierce, unstoppable drive.

“It wasn’t pretty at times and there were times when we could have brought the ball down and picked a pass better,” said Millers manager Andy Scott.

“We know that and in an ideal world we are going to do that, but we have got a clean sheet.

“They haven’t taken their chances and we have punished them with a good finish after a good breakaway.

“It keeps us ticking along nicely.”
