Rotherham United 3 Torquay United 1: Banks proves a chip off the old block with debut Millers strike

This was only their second win in the final 14 games for Rotherham, their promotion bid falling away so making it a less than memorable end to the season.

However, there was certainly a memorable moment for a young man whose father was a pretty familiar name in south and west Yorkshire in his playing days.

Ollie Banks, son of former Huddersfield, Bradford, Barnsley and Rotherham midfielder Ian, marked his Millers debut with a goal within three minutes of going on late in the game.

The 18-year-old, also a midfield player, went on for his debut with 13 minutes left and, with only his second touch, produced a neat finish to a pass from Adam Le Fondre to ensure Rotherham signed off with a win.

Torquay arrived knowing a win guaranteed them a play-off spot but they made it anyway because of Gillingham’s defeat at League Two champions Chesterfield.

Rotherham went ahead after 10 minutes, Ryan Taylor netting his 12th of the season after his first effort was not held. Torquay levelled after half-an-hour through Chris Zebroski but with Nicky Law creating havoc down the left, Rotherham were quickly back in front through Danny Harrison following a corner.

An open and entertaining game was concluded by Banks’s debut goal to ensure Rotherham ended a run of six games at home without a win.

Rotherham manager Andy Scott has 10 players out of contract and futures will be decided this week. He said 24-goal top scorer Le Fondre, still under contract, would be staying.

“There are going to be changes, it looks like being a busy summer,” said Scott, for whom this was a first win in his fifth match in charge.
