Rotherham United: Evans made aware of Cambridge’s capabilities

MANAGER Steve Evans insists Rotherham United will not be taking League Two opponents Cambridge United lightly as his side look to bounce back from their worst opening day home defeat for 21 years.

The Millers crashed to a 4-1 loss against Milton Keynes Dons, the club’s worst reverse on home soil to start a season since crashing 4-0 against Shrewsbury Town at Millmoor in 1994.

“It is an important game,” said Evans.

Cambridge United have invested and had a great FA Cup run last year, when they drew with Manchester United and went to Old Trafford.

“They probably ended with £2m out of that.

“They could take Conor Newton out of Rotherham and put him on the same wages as we at Rotherham paid for him, and that probably says much about the investment being put into their team.”

Cambridge started the season in impressive fashion by putting three goals without reply past Terry Butcher’s Newport County.

As had been the case with several pre-season games, the Millers had a scout in the crowd at the Abbey Stadium and Evans says all the reports have been complimentary about the U’s.

The United manager added: “We have had them watched twice in pre-season and they have been excellent.

“It will be a proper game for us.

“I remember when we took Crawley to Old Trafford for a cup game and Sir Alex Ferguson wrote that we were more like a League One team and he was right.

“Our head of recruitment who watched Cambridge said that this is more like a top League One club coming and not just a League One side.

“If you look at people they have signed such as Conor, that would be true.”

On the need to bounce back from the opening day loss, Evans said: “We had the boys in on Sunday and had a long look back at the game.

“Their goals were all mistakes, really poor defending.”
