Rotherham United v Torquay United: Strong defence providing Millers with platform to push for play-offs

ANDY Scott has hailed Rotherham United’s new-found defensive solidity as his side tonight look to lay down a marker in the race for the play-offs.

The Millers host fifth-placed Torquay United on a night when only Crawley Town of the other teams occupying a place in the top 10 are in action.

It means a United victory will not only boost the South Yorkshire club’s hopes of fighting their way into the top seven but also set up Saturday’s trip to Oxford United, the side who occupy the final play-off position.

Scott said: “We have lost one in eight and are on a very good run.

“Defensively, we are very, very sound and that has given us a platform to pick up some points.

“A few results went for us (on Saturday). All we can do now is try to win our games.”

Of those eight games, Rotherham have won three and drawn four, while tonight’s visitors to the Don Valley have won nine of their last 12 games.

Rotherham enjoyed a memorable weekend with the win over Plymouth Argyle being followed on Sunday night by being named Community Club of the Year at the Football League awards ceremony in London.

Chairman Tony Stewart collected the award on behalf of the Millers along with head of community Jamie Noble in front of a packed audience after the South Yorkshire club pipped fellow finalists Notts County, Portsmouth, Milton Keynes and Bury to the accolade.

Stewart said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the football club.

“The significance of this award cannot be over-emphasised.

“We beat off competition from every other Football League club in this country, which gives me a feeling of great pride.
