The result leaves Rotherham in fifth, 12 points off the automatic promotion places.

Millers boss Steve Evans said: “This is always a hard place to go but you have earn the right to play and when we work as hard as we have done today then we usually win. We don’t kid ourselves, we know how hard it is to come away from home and win in League One.

“We work hard every day on passing and moving the ball around the final third and we did that really well in the first half hour. We said second half don’t take any chances, keep the ball and when we have good possession let’s see what we can do and they followed that to the letter.”

Shrewsbury Town manager Graham Turner said: “You can’t concede the goals we have conceded today. They were appalling goals to concede and we have asked for it with poor defending like that. It is the second weekend we have conceded early and we couldn’t cope with the threat of Rotherham.”
