Shrewsbury 2 Rotherham 1: Ten-man Millers fail to cope with red card

Ten-man Rotherham United were dumped out of the FA Cup and left Millers fans dreaming of what might have been.

The visitors looked in control when Lewis Grabban converted a penalty after Matt Richards had fouled Sam Wood.

But then the Millers had Marcus Marshall sent off for two yellow card offences just before half-time and the Shrews came out after the break with renewed optimism.

That proved well-founded when former Rotherham captain Ian Sharps levelled from close range for his first goal of the season after Conrad Logan failed to hold Mark Wright’s corner. Former Barnsley midfielder Nick Wroe’s penalty won it following Johnny Mullins’s foul on Marvin Morgan.

Defeat left Millers manager Andy Scott unhappy at some of the referee’s decisions.

“The two goals that they’ve scored shouldn’t have been goals,” he said. “We’ve spoken to the referee about it in the first half. He neglected to keep an eye on it. He was in a poor position. Conrad (Logan, keeper) couldn’t get a punch to it. He held his arm down.

“I thought we were poor, especially in the first half when we were 11 versus 11. We didn’t play with the intensity and the tempo we usually do. We played too deep as a back four and allowed them too many chances to get the ball in the box.”
