But the Millers chief has confirmed that, depending on crowd levels next season in the Championship, building work could get under way during the summer of 2015.

When the 12,000 capacity stadium was built, it was designed in such a way that capacity could be increased quite simply.

Stewart said: “In such a short space of time, it would not be possible (to complete any building work). But what promotion would do is give us a test to see what capacity we need.

“We will monitor crowds because I do not want to restrict anyone from coming to Rotherham United due to us being sold out.

“It will allow us to prepare. Let’s hope we get promotion, as I would love to put my hand in my pocket to take this forward to 16,000 or even 20,000.”

United’s own rebuilding work for next season began yesterday with the capture of Newcastle United midfielder Conor Newton.

The 22-year-old was also wanted by Wolverhampton Wanderers but has shown his commitment to the Millers by agreeing his move ahead of tomorrow’s play-off final.

On future signings, manager Steve Evans added: “We have discussed two different lists, depending on what happens at Wembley. The chairman is a very successful businessman and he thinks positively, but with realism. Whatever division we are in, we need to be stronger on the pitch. The pond for us will become bigger if it is Championship.”
