Rugby league round-up: Keighley win, but defeats for Doncaster, York, Hunslet and Dewsbury

Two tries from Andy Gabriel helped Keighley Cougars overcome a 12-4 interval deficit to beat Doncaster 30-22 yesterday in the Ipro Sport Cup.

Doncaster’s tries came from Liam Welham, Kieran Cross, Charlie Martin and Iafeta Paleaaesina, Jordan Howden kicking three goals.

But the Cougars came out on top, with Adam Ryder, Fran Welsh, Sean Kelly and Emmerson Whittel tries. Matty Beharrell added three goals.

Hunslet lost 34-10 at home to Newcastle Thunder.

Jake Normington and Mufaro Mvududu crossed for Hunslet, Joe Sanderson adding a goal, but Newcastle won with tries from Ali Blair, Tyler Craig, Derrell Olpherts, Rhys Clarke, Lewis Young, Vincent Rennie and Evan Simons. Benn Hardcastle kicked three goals.

York City Knights let a 12-4 half-time lead slip to lose 17-16 at home to North Wales Crusaders.

Two tries from Ash Robson, plus an Ed Smith effort and two Harry Tyson-Wilson goals, were not enough for York as the Crusaders replied with tries from Dale Bloomfield, Tommy Johnson and Danny Price. Johnson added two goals and Jack Hansen kicked the match-winning drop goal.

In the Championship, Dewsbury Rams suffered a 56-2 defeat at Toulouse on Saturday.

All the Rams had to show for their efforts was a Paul Sykes penalty from 35 metres out.

Kuni Minga led the way with a hat-trick of tries, with Constantine Mika, Bastien Canet (2), Bastien Ader, Tony Maurel, Stan Robin, Mark Kheirallah and Kane Bentley all crossing,

It’s been a tough start for Glenn Morrison’s side, who have yet to register a win this season after three rounds.
