Scannell wants to pull clear earlier
this time

Being part of Crystal Palace’s final-day escape three years ago is one of Sean Scannell’s happiest memories.

Even so, ahead of tonight’s crucial trip to Bolton Wanderers, the Huddersfield winger has made it clear that he does not want Town to leave it as late this time around to secure their Championship status.

“The feeling when Palace stayed up was great,” said the winger about the events of May 2, 2010 at Hillsborough when a draw was enough to keep the London club up at the expense of Sheffield Wednesday.

“That season was unbelievable as we were hoping to get in the play-offs, but then went into administration. After that, it was all about staying in the league.

“The feeling when we stayed up was great. It was like we had won promotion and definitely one of my favourite memories. It was important for the club as we were in admin at the time.

“But I don’t want to go through it again. I want Huddersfield to be safe and nothing on the last couple of games, meaning other clubs have to fight it out.”

If Huddersfield are to be able to relax going into their own final-day game this term at home to Barnsley, they will have to perform a lot better than was the case in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Hull City.

On an admittedly poor pitch, the Terriers struggled and it was not until stoppage time that the Tigers’ goal came under any pressure.

Scannell insists a fixture list that includes home games against fellow strugglers Peterborough and Barnsley means Town can get out of trouble.

He added: “Anyone can go down. We just need these two wins, and maybe a couple of draws. We don’t want to leave it too late.

“The league is so tight and everyone is beating each other, but we can get out of it. We are not downhearted.

“We have got a good month coming up with all the fixtures we have.

“We have all the teams near us and two wins will mean we should be all right. We are all looking forward to Bolton away, which will be a good test.

“Peterborough are coming to us on Saturday. If we win that and at Bolton then we will be in a good position again come Saturday night. That has to be the aim.”

Adam Clayton starts a two-game ban tonight after collecting his 10th booking of the season in the Hull defeat.

After defeating leaders Cardiff on Saturday, Peterborough will want to further enhance their survival hopes when they travel to Middlesbrough.

Boro have faded for a second successive season and just one win from their last nine games has dealt a serious blow to their play-off prospects.

Boro’s Chelsea loanee Josh McEachran could return to the starting line-up after ankle trouble.
