Scunthorpe 2 Doncaster 0: Uninspiring Rovers unable to halt slide

SCUNTHORPE United piled more pressure on Doncaster boss Darren Ferguson after Rovers disappointed in defeat once again.

The visitors slid to a dismal seventh loss in their last eight games and remain perilously close to the drop zone.

They were behind at the interval, with the Iron grabbing the only goal after just seven minutes. Conor Townsend crossed superbly for Tom Hopper, who stroked the ball home from close range.

As the hosts continued to dominate, Paddy Madden forced a fine save out of ‘keeper Thorsten Stuckmann. Rovers offered little in the way of an attacking threat, though Nathan Tyson went close shortly before the interval when he drilled a shot just past the post.

Stuckmann was called into action minutes after the restart, making another neat stop to keep out Hopper.

It seemed like only a matter of time before the Iron struck again, and they did just that in the 58th minute when David Mirfin headed home Jim O’Brien’s in-corner. Townsend almost made it 3-0, but his shot was bravely blocked by Conor Grant.
